Rosh Hashanah pilgrims paid a record ₴25 million in tourist tax
About 50,000 pilgrims who came to Uman to celebrate Rosh Hashanah paid approximately 25 million hryvnias in tourist tax. According to Ukraine’s Chief Rabbi Moshe Reuven Asman, this is a record amount, not only since the start of the full-scale war.
“This year, about 50,000 guests came to Uman. According to preliminary official estimates by city authorities, they paid about 25 million hryvnias in tourist tax alone—a record amount, and not just during the war. And this is only the tourist tax, which goes directly to the state budget,” the statement reads.
According to Moshe Reuven Asman, pilgrims who visited Uman this year complained about a significant increase in the cost of food and lodging.
“For example, a pizza that used to cost $5–10 was now selling for $25, and housing prices during Rosh Hashanah skyrocket tenfold. Some pilgrims spend thousands and even tens of thousands of dollars on travel and lodging. And despite this, they come and pay. And they will continue to do so,” added Moshe Reuven Asman.
Thus, despite the significant increase in the cost of a trip to Uman, the flow of pilgrims for Rosh Hashanah remains substantial, and revenue from the tourist tax is reaching record levels.
After the celebrations ended, Uman’s municipal services removed more than 200 metric tons of trash from the pilgrimage area.
Cleanup of the area began after most of the guests who had come to the city to celebrate Rosh Hashanah had left.
