The petition in support of Lukyanivsky Market has reached the required number of signatures

In Kyiv, a petition calling for the restoration of the Lukyanivsky Market following the Russian missile strike on May 24, 2026, has gathered the required 6,000 signatures and must now be officially considered by city authorities. Residents insist that this is not just about rebuilding the structure, but about restoring a vital part of the neighborhood’s life that brought together business owners and residents.

The decision now moves to the city level, where further steps regarding the restoration of the facility will be determined.

In their petition, Kyiv residents describe the Lukyanivsky Market as much more than just a retail outlet, as for the Shevchenkivskyi district it was a place of affordable groceries, daily interaction, and stable employment for dozens of people. Following the missile strike on May 24, 2026, part of the infrastructure was destroyed, immediately affecting both business owners and local residents.

The petition emphasizes that the loss of the market has disrupted the district’s established rhythm of life, which had developed around this space over the years.

Residents are asking city authorities to conduct a full assessment of the damage, publish a clear reconstruction plan, and identify funding sources, including exploring the possibility of securing international aid. The petition also emphasizes the need to support business owners who lost their jobs due to the market’s destruction.

The authors of the petition also insist that restoration work begin as soon as possible, without delays or bureaucratic red tape.

A key focus of the petition is the demand to preserve the historical and social function of the Lukyanivsky Market, preventing its transformation into another commercial facility or the loss of its original purpose. For Kyiv residents, this is not merely a matter of infrastructure but also the preservation of a part of the city’s identity that has been shaped over the years.

Now the final decision rests with city authorities, who must determine whether the market’s restoration will be a priority in the near future. This is reported by bzh.life.
