Suspect in Bucha terrorist attack admits guilt

A man detained on suspicion of carrying out a terrorist attack in Bucha, in which two police officers were injured, has fully admitted his guilt, police have reported.

This was stated by the head of the criminal investigation department of the Kyiv region police, Andriy Kravchuk, during a television broadcast, according to Ukrinform.

“A local resident has been detained — a 21-year-old man with no prior convictions who lived near the scene of the crime. As of today, the detainee fully admits his guilt,” Kravchuk said.

According to investigators, the motive behind the crime was financial gain. The suspect allegedly intended to earn UAH 25,000 for each explosion carried out.

Law enforcement officers are currently identifying possible accomplices who may have assisted the suspect in manufacturing or acquiring explosive devices.

Criminal proceedings have been launched under Part 2 of Article 258 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (terrorist act). The article provides for → provides for a prison sentence of 7 to 12 years.

The condition of the injured police officers is currently stable, and their lives are not in danger.

Kravchuk explained that the attackers’ goal was to destabilise the situation in the Kyiv region and inflict maximum harm on civilians and police officers responding to emergency calls. He assured that the situation in the region is fully under control.

The official also added that, thanks to updated response protocols previously mentioned by Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko, a greater number of casualties was avoided.

Earlier in the morning, a double terrorist attack occurred near a residential building in Bucha, injuring police officers.

It is worth noting that recently, counterintelligence officers of the Security Service of Ukraine, together with the National Police, prevented a terrorist attack in the centre of Kharkiv and detained a 16-year-old agent of Russian military intelligence who was preparing an explosion in a frontline city.

Earlier, the Security Service of Ukraine also detained a Russian agent in the Kharkiv region who was gathering intelligence for missile and bomb strikes on Ukrainian military positions in the Kupiansk direction.

In addition, the SBU detained another Russian agent who, under the guise of fulfilling defence contracts, was adjusting air strikes on Kyiv.
