Support for Ukraine's accession to the EU stands at 79% — support for NATO is lower

More than three-quarters of Ukrainian citizens support the country’s accession to the European Union. At the same time, slightly fewer Ukrainians support the idea of joining NATO.

According to the results, 50% of Ukrainians unequivocally support Ukraine’s accession to the EU, while another 29% chose the response option “I tend to support it.” Ten percent of respondents unequivocally oppose EU membership.

Support for Ukraine’s accession to the EU is strongest in western and central Ukraine—55% and 53%, respectively, selected the “strongly support” option. In the south and east, 44% and 43%, respectively, chose this response.

In addition, support for Ukraine’s accession to the EU is highest among those aged 51 and older—55% selected “I definitely support it.”

However, only a relatively small proportion of Ukrainians are satisfied with the pace of European integration. Only 5% of respondents say they are “definitely satisfied,” while another 25% are “somewhat satisfied.” Twenty-five percent of those surveyed are definitely dissatisfied with the pace of integration, while 38% are somewhat dissatisfied.

As for NATO membership, if a referendum on this issue were held in the near future, 63% of respondents would vote in favor. This is 7 percentage points less than in July of last year.

Twelve percent of respondents would vote against joining NATO.

These findings come from the results of a June survey conducted by Rating Group for the Center for Analytical Studies (CISR) of the International Republican Institute (IRI).

The EU has responded to the question of whether Ukraine and Moldova will join simultaneously.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held talks with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, during which the parties discussed Ukraine’s integration into the European Union and strengthening the protection of Ukrainian airspace.

The European Commission plans to propose on June 16 the opening of the first round of negotiations on the accession of Ukraine and Moldova to the European Union.
