The amount of cash in circulation in Ukraine has decreased. Currently, the public and businesses hold over 923 billion hryvnias—approximately 3 billion hryvnias less than at the beginning of the year.

These figures were cited by Andriy Pyshnyy, Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine, during a panel discussion titled “Money Circulation: Our Own Currency.”

The head of the National Bank stated that there are currently 2.6 billion hryvnia banknotes of various denominations in circulation—totaling ₴913.5 billion—and 15.2 billion coins—worth ₴9.6 billion.

“In total, there is currently over ₴923 billion in cash circulation. The most common denomination is ₴500, and the least common is ₴50. Since the beginning of the year, the amount of cash has decreased slightly—by ₴3 billion—but this is a typical seasonal fluctuation,” Pyshnyy emphasized.

At the same time, he noted the steady increase in the volume of non-cash transactions. Last year, according to the NBU, 8.3 billion non-cash transactions were carried out in the country using payment cards—totaling ₴4 trillion.

“This exceeds the 2024 figures by more than 11% in terms of volume and 10% in terms of value. The share of non-cash transactions using payment cards last year accounted for 65.4% of the total volume of payment transactions. Whereas in 2021, it was only 60%,” added the NBU Governor.

Pyshnyy also noted that over the 32 years of operation of the National Bank of Ukraine’s Banknote and Coin Mint, nearly 30 billion banknotes have been printed, 13 billion coins for circulation and exchange have been minted, and over 20 million commemorative and investment coins have been produced. Additionally, more than 10 million state awards of various types have been manufactured.

At the same time, the Banknote and Coin Mint also fulfills orders from other countries. After all, only 60 countries in the world have a full-cycle money production process, ranging from the manufacture of special paper to high-tech printing of banknotes with the highest level of security.

Andriy Pyshnyy’s academicbiography has become the subject of anti-corruption investigations.
