The tax authority has gained access to data on border crossings

The State Tax Service and the State Border Guard Service have introduced an automated system for exchanging information on crossings of the state border. The State Tax Service emphasized that this new measure does not change the rules for leaving Ukraine and does not entail additional checks at border crossing points.

As explained by the agency, the information will be used to determine citizens’ tax residency, verify whether financial documents were signed by company executives who were abroad, and identify schemes involving “gray” imports, exports, and tax evasion.

Previously, to obtain such information, the tax authority sent written requests to the State Border Guard Service, and responses were prepared manually. Now, the exchange will take place automatically through a secure system, which will reduce the time required to process requests to just a few seconds.

The State Tax Service emphasized that each request will be made only on lawful grounds, signed with a qualified electronic signature by an official, and all actions will be recorded in audit logs.

The service also stressed that tax arrears alone do not constitute grounds for prohibiting travel abroad. Such a restriction may be imposed only by a court decision in cases provided for by law.
