Former lawmaker and Chernobyl accident liquidator Oleksandr Ryabeka has died

On June 22, it was announced that Oleksandr Ryabeka, a member of the Ukrainian Parliament of the 5th and 6th convocations, had passed away. He was also a scholar, human rights activist, and a participant in the cleanup efforts following the Chernobyl nuclear disaster.

“We regret to announce that yesterday, June 21, Oleksandr Ryabeka, a Member of the Ukrainian Parliament of the 5th and 6th convocations, scholar, and human rights activist, passed away,” the statement reads.

During his time in parliament, Oleksandr Ryabeka chaired the Subcommittee on Legislative Support for Anti-Corruption Policy and Oversight of Citizens’ Rights within the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Combating Organized Crime and Corruption.

In addition to his legislative work, he was actively engaged in research and human rights advocacy, and was known for his civic activism.

A particularly significant part of his career was his involvement in the cleanup efforts following the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident, which became one of the greatest man-made disasters in human history.

Oleksandr Ryabeka left a significant mark on Ukrainian politics, academia, and public life, dedicating a substantial part of his career to protecting citizens’ rights and fighting corruption.

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine announced the news of his passing.

Earlier, Ukrainian blogger Denys Opara, better known as Denchik from Khreshchatyk, passed away. The influencer’s death was reported by his family.

Ukrainian scientist and human rights activist Natalia Belitser passed away at the age of 88. Her son, Kirill Bulkin, announced her death.
