Cucumbers and cabbage have become much more expensive in Ukraine: what are vegetable prices like now?

A new price shift has begun in Ukraine’s vegetable market: some produce has risen sharply in price, despite the summer season, while others, on the contrary, continue to get cheaper. The most notable increases were seen in cucumbers and young cabbage, which rose by several hryvnias over the course of a week. Against this backdrop, the market remains uneven and unpredictable, with sharp price fluctuations even within a single segment.

According to analysts at EastFruit, wholesale prices for cucumbers rose over the week from 25–40 to 35–50 hryvnias per kilogram—an increase of about 10 hryvnias. This occurred despite it being the summer season, when prices are typically expected to fall due to a seasonal increase in supply. The market attributes these fluctuations to uneven product arrivals and local changes in demand.

At the same time, tomato prices continue to fall and are now selling for 65–85 hryvnias per kilogram, down from 70–100 hryvnias a week earlier. The price of sweet peppers has also dropped significantly—from 125–170 to 100–120 hryvnias. Thus, part of the greenhouse segment is showing the opposite trend compared to cucumbers.

Cabbage prices are rising sharply, while potato prices are fluctuating

The sharpest price jump was recorded for young white cabbage, which nearly doubled in price—from 15–18 to 27–30 hryvnias per kilogram. This is one of the most notable market movements over the past week, driven by a reduction in supply amid strong demand.

New potatoes, on the other hand, have become cheaper and now cost between 18 and 65 hryvnias per kilogram, down from the previous 35–65. Old potatoes saw a slight price increase—up to 14–17 hryvnias. Onions also rose in price by about 20 percent and now cost 16–18 hryvnias per kilogram. Eggplant prices have narrowed—from 100–190 to 120–130 hryvnias—indicating that market supply is stabilizing.

Fruits and berries are also becoming more expensive

A general increase in prices has been recorded in the fruit and berry segment. Pears have risen in price from 45–80 to 65–90 hryvnias per kilogram. Strawberries have also gone up in price and now cost 90–180 hryvnias instead of the previous 70–120. Cherries showed an even sharper jump—to 130–190 hryvnias per kilogram.

What analysts are saying about future prices

Market experts warn that the current stability in low prices is only temporary. According to Denys Marchuk, deputy chairman of the All-Ukrainian Agrarian Council, vegetables will remain affordable only through the summer, after which prices may rise by up to 15 percent in the fall.

Meat prices are also projected to rise by up to 20 percent, while bread prices could increase by up to 25 percent year-over-year. At the same time, prices in the dairy segment are expected to decline slightly due to a seasonal drop in demand and promotional offers from retail chains.

The market is in a state of constant fluctuation

The overall picture shows that Ukraine’s vegetable market is currently undergoing uneven changes, where seasonality no longer guarantees price declines. Some items are becoming more expensive due to shortages or logistical factors, while others are becoming cheaper due to excess supply or weaker demand.

As a result, consumers are receiving mixed signals: some products are becoming more affordable, while others are putting a noticeable strain on the budget even in the height of summer. This is reported by analysts from the EastFruit project.

This summer, prices for dairy and meat products in Ukraine are expected to rise by between 8% and 20%. Denis Marchuk, deputy chairman of the All-Ukrainian Agrarian Council, announced this during a speech at the Media Center Ukraine. The expert cited labor costs, the hryvnia’s exchange rate against foreign currencies, and the overall inflation rate as the key factors directly influencing the final price of goods.
