Renowned Odessa chess player Vyacheslav Einhorn has died

Vyacheslav Einhorn, a renowned chess player and grandmaster from Odesa, died at the age of 70. 

The cause of death has not yet been disclosed.

Vyacheslav Einhorn had a distinguished career and won a number of prestigious team awards.

As a member of the Ukrainian national team, he won the 2001 World Team Chess Championship and took home a silver medal at the same tournament in 1993.

Eingorn also won the 1989 European Team Championship as a member of the USSR national team. As part of the Ukrainian team, he took silver at the 1992 continental championship—the first European Championship for independent Ukraine.

He is considered a representative of the “golden” generation of Ukrainian chess players.

At the 2000 Chess Olympiad, the Odessa native took third place.

Among Einhorn’s other achievements are a silver medal at the 1986 USSR Championship, as well as three bronze medals at the Soviet Championship—in 1984, 1987, and 1989.

In 2004, Vyacheslav Einhorn effectively ended his playing career and focused on coaching.

Under his leadership, the Ukrainian women’s national team won gold medals at the 2006 Chess Olympiad.

Eingorn left a lasting mark on the history of Ukrainian chess both as a player and as a mentor to a new generation of players.

FIDE Director General Emil Sutovsky announced the athlete’s death.

As a reminder, on August 15 in Lviv, artist and vytynanka master Daria Alyoshkina died suddenly at the age of 45. Her works represented Ukraine in 22 countries around the world, adorned the UN headquarters, and the artist herself collaborated with the renowned brand Cartier.

Earlier, renowned Russian chanson singer Mikhail Gulko passed away.

Actress Lucy Davis announced that she has been diagnosed with terminal breast cancer.
