Fires in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone Are Still Being Extinguished: What Is Known About the Background Radiation Levels
As of the morning of July 3, units of the State Emergency Service, the fire department of the “Pivnichna Pushcha” State Nature Reserve, and reserve staff are jointly fighting the fires.
It is reported that the fire is still raging in some areas. To prevent it from spreading, rescue workers are encircling and plowing around the fire hotspots, creating mineralized firebreaks, and clearing forest roads to allow firefighting equipment to pass.
The situation is being monitored around the clock using drones and video surveillance systems. The work is being hampered by gusty winds and hot weather.
Reserve officials have assured that, despite the prolonged forest fire, radiation levels in the exclusion zone remain within normal limits. No instances of radiation levels exceeding permissible limits have been recorded.
Efforts to extinguish the remaining hotspots are currently underway, and the situation is under the control of emergency services.
This was reported by the Chernobyl Radiation-Ecological Biosphere Reserve.
