The SBU announced that a plot to assassinate Akhmed Zakayev was being planned; a suspect has been identified
The Security Service of Ukraine suspects Stepan Kaplunov, deputy commander of the Russian Volunteer Corps, of plotting an assassination attempt on Akhmed Zakayev—the head of the government-in-exile of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria.
According to the SBU, the case involves an attempt to organize an assassination attempt on Zakayev outside Ukraine.
Ahmed Zakayev visited Ukraine on Independence Day, August 24. It was then that an assassination attempt was being prepared against “one of the leaders of the Russian opposition.”
Earlier, the SBU announced that it had exposed the deputy commander of the Russian Volunteer Corps, who was tasked with planning an assassination attempt on one of the leaders of the Russian opposition movement during his visit to Ukraine.
The SBU stated that the deputy commander of the Russian Volunteer Corps had received orders from Russian intelligence agencies to eliminate servicemen of the Ukrainian Defense Forces. To corroborate its statement, the SBU released a video featuring Stepan Kaplunov, in which he admits that he was “recruited by the FSB.”
Taras Borovskyi, the attorney for the RDK deputy commander, commented on the video released by the SBU, stating that it was filmed “while in captivity under pressure, torture, and death threats.”
