Switzerland will stop granting protection status to Ukrainians subject to military service

Switzerland will stop granting protection status to Ukrainians subject to military service

Switzerland has extended the S temporary protection status for Ukrainians until March 4, 2028, but at the same time has introduced a new restriction for men.

The Federal Council adopted the corresponding decision on August 19. The government explained the extension of protection by citing the lack of prospects for a swift and lasting end to the war in Ukraine.

At the same time, Switzerland decided to align its policy with that of the European Union. Starting August 20, 2026, S status will be granted to new applicants only if they are performing military duties that may apply to them in Ukraine.

The restriction will apply only to new applicants. Ukrainians who have already been granted S status in Switzerland will not be affected by the new rules.

The Swiss government noted that Switzerland is not legally obligated to comply with the EU’s decision but considers it appropriate to align its rules with those of European countries.

Should the situation in Ukraine stabilize consistently, the Federal Council may reconsider its decision regarding temporary protection status.

Germany will no longer grant temporary protection to newly arrived Ukrainian men between the ages of 23 and 60 who are not exempt from military service. The new rule applies to those who arrived in the country on or after July 31, 2026.

A majority of Poles support a proposal by the opposition Law and Justice party to deport Ukrainian men of draft age who do not have legal employment.
