Sibiga commented on the lifting of U.S. sanctions against Russian ships

During a press conference in Kyiv, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga warned international partners against any easing of sanctions against Russia.

According to him, Moscow is attempting to exploit the conflict in the Middle East to ease restrictions, but Ukraine’s position remains unchanged: progress in peace efforts is possible only if pressure is increased, Interfax-Ukraine reports. The minister called any steps backward a sign of weakness that creates illusions about Russia’s readiness for constructive negotiations.

Sybiga paid particular attention to the U.S. Treasury Department’s decision to remove three Russian-flagged vessels from the sanctions lists. He emphasized the need for a tough and realistic assessment of the Kremlin’s actions, calling for an end to the positive perception of Russia. Putin’s regime must realize that unconstructive behavior will lead to the introduction of additional leverage tools, including new restrictions on a wide range of entities and an increase in defense aid to Ukraine.

The minister also underscored the importance of coordinated transatlantic pressure and finalizing the ban on providing maritime services to Russia’s shadow fleet. Strengthening the long-range capabilities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine was cited as one of the key factors in compelling the aggressor to peace. According to the Foreign Minister, only a consolidated position by the international community can stop Russia’s attempts to manipulate the international agenda to evade responsibility for its aggression.

On March 31, the U.S. temporarily lifted sanctions on several Russian vessels. This applies to container ships and tankers flying the Russian flag that were already en route. New shipments and transactions with Iran remain prohibited.

U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hagset revealed details of the coalition’s confrontation with Russia, China, and Iran during a briefing at the Pentagon.
