Sibiga cautioned Budapest against using EU legal mechanisms in the Oschadbank case
Ukraine is currently deliberately refraining from initiating the official legal procedures provided for in the Association Agreement with the European Union regarding Hungary.
This concerns the high-profile case involving the seizure of Oschadbank’s bank assets and funds, which remains a contentious issue in bilateral relations.
During a meeting with media representatives, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga emphasized that Kyiv seeks to avoid creating new points of tension with its neighbor.
The diplomatic corps views legal action as a last resort, giving preference to negotiation processes.
The situation regarding the Ukrainian bank’s assets seized by the Hungarian side has been ongoing for a long time without a logical resolution.
The head of the foreign ministry stressed that Ukraine has a clear understanding of the course of action within the framework of European legislation, but stability is the priority at this time.
“I said in my speech that we do not want to invoke the Association Agreement with Hungary regarding the bank assets that were confiscated. Regarding the funds. We have this mechanism. Right now, we do not want to invoke it and create an additional problem,” explained Andriy Sybiga.
According to the minister, such a measured position is not a sign of weakness, but merely an expression of diplomatic restraint in the interests of regional security.
At the same time, he made it clear that Ukraine does not intend to compromise its economic interests or the property rights of state institutions.
The Foreign Minister emphasized that if the Hungarian side ignores Ukraine’s demands, Kyiv will be forced to take more decisive steps.
“If necessary, we also know how to proceed in this area,” Andriy Sibiga warned representatives from Budapest.
