Ukraine’s Allies Work to Align Position Ahead of Possible Talks with Russia
Senior representatives of Ukraine’s partners are meeting to develop a joint Ukrainian, European and US position that could later be presented to Russia as part of renewed diplomatic efforts. US negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are among those in attendance, participating in broader coordination efforts.
The gathering of the so-called “coalition of the willing” comes amid an acceleration in diplomatic activity in recent weeks. The French president has expressed cautious optimism, noting that discussions focus in part on security guarantees for Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire.
However, prospects for meaningful progress remain uncertain. Washington’s attention has partly shifted toward developments in Venezuela, while there are few indications that Moscow is ready to accept the proposals currently under discussion. Control over territory continues to be a central obstacle, as fighting on the ground shows no sign of easing.
Russia controls roughly one-fifth of Ukraine’s territory and is seeking full control of the Donbas. It holds all of Luhansk region, while Kyiv retains significant areas of Donetsk, where heavy fighting continues.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly warned that ceding territory would embolden Moscow and has said he will not sign an agreement that fails to deter future aggression. He has also stressed that giving up Ukrainian land is prohibited under the country’s constitution.
