A soldier will stand trial for beating a fellow soldier in front of the formation and deserting his unit

The State Bureau of Investigation (DBR) has completed its pretrial investigation and filed an indictment against a servicemember who, on May 1, 2026, in the Dnipropetrovsk region, brutally beat a fellow soldier in front of the formation, tied him up with straps, and forced him to film the incident on his phone. 

After committing the crime, the defendant left his military unit without authorization and went into hiding from law enforcement, but was eventually apprehended. 

The crime has been classified under articles covering torture, desertion, and violation of statutory rules governing military relations. The accused is currently being held in custody at the military detention center.

The penalties under the applicable articles provide for imprisonment for up to 12 years.
