One reason cited is that the U.S. leader was impressed by Zelenskyy’s resilience amid a full-scale war.
In addition, according to the WSJ, Trump viewed the Ukrainian Defense Forces’ campaign of long-range strikes on Russian territory positively.
The U.S. president has also taken an interest in Ukraine’s drone industry after witnessing the effectiveness of such technologies during the war in the Middle East.
One of the publication’s sources noted that Trump “loves winners” and increasingly views Zelenskyy as just that.
According to the WSJ, the U.S. president’s attitude toward Ukraine was also influenced by a meeting with Ukrainian world boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk, which took place before a UFC fight night at the White House. According to the newspaper’s sources, the boxer told Trump that Ukrainians are “fighters and winners” and also spoke about his family’s life during the Russian shelling of Kyiv. In addition, Usyk emphasized that the differences between Ukrainians and Russians lie “in the mind and heart.”
Another factor that may have influenced Trump’s position was his conversations with far-right activist and blogger Laura Loomer. According to the publication, despite her previous criticism of Ukraine, she has recently changed her stance and begun supporting Kyiv.
