Church holiday on May 12: why it is recommended to be careful at work on this day

On May 12, according to the New Julian Church Calendar, Orthodox Christians in Ukraine commemorate Saints Epiphanius and Herman. Epiphanius of Cyprus, also known as Epiphanius of Salamis, lived in the 4th century and is considered one of the most prominent theologians of early Christianity. He was born in Palestine, chose the monastic path at a young age, and devoted his life to prayer, spiritual service, and the study of the Holy Scriptures.

On this day, believers turn to the saints with prayers for spiritual wisdom, strengthening of faith, protection from misfortune, and peace of mind.

In folk tradition, people were advised to exercise particular caution when handling sharp objects, tools, and fire on May 12 to avoid injuries and misfortune. The day was also considered auspicious for prayer, peaceful work, and good deeds.

Later, Epiphanius became bishop of the city of Salamis in Cyprus. His ministry coincided with a time of active theological disputes within the Church. He is known as an unwavering defender of Orthodox doctrine and the author of numerous works directed against heresies.

He is remembered as a zealous shepherd who allowed no compromise in matters of faith, yet remained deeply humble and spiritually strong.

Saint Herman I of Constantinople lived in the 7th–8th centuries and served as Patriarch of Constantinople during one of the most difficult periods in church history—the time of iconoclasm.

He came from a noble family, received a brilliant education, and later became a church hierarch. His patriarchal ministry coincided with a time when the imperial authorities were attempting to ban the veneration of icons.

Because of his principled stance, he was forced to renounce the patriarchal throne, but his spiritual authority only grew. Later, the Church recognized him as one of the main defenders of Orthodox icon veneration.
