In 2026, 645 people died in Ukraine as a result of speeding

From January through June 2026, 645 people died in Ukraine as a result of traffic accidents caused by speeding. Speeding remains one of the leading causes of fatal accidents on Ukrainian roads.

 

“From January through June 2026, 4,564 traffic accidents resulting in fatalities and/or injuries were recorded due to speeding violations, in which 645 people were killed and 5,804 were injured,” the police reported.

Details: According to the patrol police, from the beginning of 2026 through July 27, drivers in Ukraine exceeded the speed limit 2,895,005 times, with the majority of these violations involving speeds 20 to 50 km/h over the limit. Meanwhile, throughout 2025, 5,372,882 instances of speeding were recorded.

Also in 2025, 1,718 people were killed and 1,298 were injured in traffic accidents caused by speeding. In total, 10,599 traffic accidents resulting in fatalities and/or injuries occurred last year.

As a reminder, the Pryluky City and District Court in Chernihiv Oblast sentenced a former police officer to eight years in prison for a fatal traffic accident that killed a six-year-old child.

In the Lviv region, a 68-year-old driver of a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, who was under the influence of alcohol, fatally struck a Ukrainian Armed Forces servicemember. This was reported by the Lviv Regional Prosecutor’s Office.
