Following the attack, the oil contaminated the Black Sea coast and harmed the birds
Sunflower oil pollution has been detected along the coast in Chornomorsk. The substance was found along the city’s shoreline, where it has spread over a significant area. According to preliminary reports, the spill occurred following a Russian attack on a storage tank at the local port. The pollution has also affected local birds.
This was reported by the State Environmental Inspection of the Southwestern District.
As a reminder, on April 26, Russian forces shelled the city of Chornomorsk, damaging the infrastructure of the Chornomorsk commercial seaport. During the fire, a 6,000-ton sunflower oil tank was destroyed.
Barriers were immediately installed on the site to contain the spill, and storm drains were shut off to prevent product residues from entering the aquatic environment. No soil contamination was detected, but an oil leak into the port’s water area was observed.
During an inspection of the water area and coastline within the city limits, the State Environmental Inspection found that the contamination extends along the shoreline for approximately 700 meters, and in some places extends into the sea by a distance of 1 to 15 meters.
Measures are currently underway to mitigate the consequences and prevent further spread of the pollution.
In the port of Chornomorsk, cleanup of the sunflower oil spill is underway—booms have been installed.
