In Kharkiv, a 22-year-old mother was charged with brutally beating her newborn daughter

In Kharkiv, law enforcement officials charged a 22-year-old woman with brutally beating her newborn daughter. The infant was diagnosed with multiple fractures and severe brain damage

According to the investigation, the girl was born in late January 2024. The abuse began when she was only a few weeks old. It has been established that throughout February and March 2024, the single mother systematically beat the infant, rocked her aggressively, grabbed her abruptly by the torso, and roughly changed her body position. There was also a documented instance in which she allowed the child’s head to strike a table.

As a result of these actions, the girl suffered fractures of her ribs, legs, and skull, as well as a severe traumatic brain injury and intracranial hemorrhages. The results of the forensic medical examination confirmed that the child had suffered repeated injuries over an extended period of time.

The infant was taken to the hospital in critical condition by her grandmother. The girl remained hospitalized for nearly five months. Currently, the 22-year-old mother has voluntarily relinquished her parental rights, and the grandmother has been granted custody of the child.

Investigators have charged the suspect under three articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine: Part 1 of Article 122 (intentional bodily injury of moderate severity), Part 1 of Article 121 (intentional serious bodily injury), and Article 166 (malicious failure to fulfill child care obligations). The pretrial investigation is ongoing.
