In Khmelnytskyi, a toddler fell from the sixth floor due to his mother's negligence

A child under the age of two fell out of an open window of a high-rise building in Khmelnytskyi while his mother was distracted by household chores. The boy was hospitalized, and law enforcement officials have opened a criminal investigation.

This was reported on Thursday, April 30, by the press service of the Khmelnytskyi Regional Police.

In Khmelnytskyi on Shevchenko Street, a boy aged 1 year and 9 months fell from an open window on the sixth floor of a residential building and was hospitalized.

The accident occurred on the morning of April 29. According to the investigation, the mother and son were in the kitchen. The woman was distracted for a few minutes while washing dishes, and the boy climbed onto the windowsill and fell out of the open window.

The child was hospitalized. Investigators opened a criminal case under Article 166 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine—gross neglect of child care duties. The penalty under this article provides for 2 to 5 years of restricted freedom or imprisonment.

Police remind the public: open windows pose a serious danger to young children who are unaware of the risk. To prevent tragedies, experts recommend:

do not leave children unattended in rooms with open windows;
do not place furniture near windows that a child could use as a step;
install locks or latches on windows that prevent them from being opened independently;
use special safety bars or reinforced window screens.
