Lviv may introduce new restrictions on electric scooters

Lviv may introduce new restrictions on electric scooters

Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi has proposed introducing new rules for the use of electric scooters, which are intended to improve road safety and reduce the number of injuries among children.

According to the mayor, this year alone, more than 100 children in Lviv were hospitalized due to injuries sustained while riding electric scooters

In addition, last year three children became posthumous organ donors after suffering severe injuries related to electric scooters.

“For me, this is reason enough to stop pretending the problem doesn’t exist. Today, at the executive committee meeting, we reviewed proposals aimed at making the use of electric scooters in Lviv safer,” Sadovyi emphasized.

According to the city government’s initiative, new rules for users of rental electric scooters may take effect in Lviv starting July 1.

Among the proposed changes:

  • electric scooter rentals will be available only to people aged 16 and older;
  • service operators must ensure mandatory age verification for users;
  • in accident-prone areas of the city, the speed limit is planned to be reduced to 15 km/h;
  • the use of protective helmets will become mandatory;
  • rental scooters will be prohibited from being left outside of designated parking areas.

Andriy Sadovyi noted that city authorities cannot completely ban electric scooters, as they lack the necessary authority.

“That is why we are doing what we can realistically do right now: tightening the rules, limiting speeds in dangerous areas, and insisting on changes to state legislation. No business and no convenience can be more important than human life,” the mayor emphasized.

City officials hope that the new restrictions will help reduce the number of traffic accidents and injuries involving electric scooters, especially among children and teenagers.

Andriy Sadovyi wrote about this on Telegram.

As a reminder, the parliamentary committee on transport and infrastructure has officially recommended that the Verkhovna Rada adopt a bill establishing clear rules for users of electric vehicles.

As a reminder, electric scooters have once again become a topic of discussion following a traffic accident in Vorzel.

We previously reported that new rules for electric scooter rentals have taken effect in the Latvian capital, aimed at addressing the most common issues arising from the presence of this mode of transportation on the streets.
