The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine has appointed Dmytro Ponomarenko as Ambassador-at-Large.

He will be responsible for issues related to prisoners of war, civilians deprived of their personal liberty, and those missing in action.

The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced this on Telegram.

Dmytro Ponomarenko has been appointed to this position in the Department of International Law and International Legal Counteraction to Aggression,” the statement reads.

From 2021 to 2025, he represented Ukraine as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Korea and concurrently to Mongolia.

The Ambassador-at-Large will coordinate efforts within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to identify effective mechanisms to influence the aggressor state, Russia, with the aim of preventing torture and inhumane treatment of Ukrainian prisoners of war, as well as cooperating on issues related to the release of Ukrainian defenders, civilians deprived of their liberty, and the protection of the rights of those missing in action.

Specifically, this follows agreements reached by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with representatives of the Coordination Headquarters on the Treatment of Prisoners of War and the Public Council under the Coordination Headquarters regarding a plan of joint actions, including advocacy activities, for 2026.
