The police explained why a Hromadske journalist was taken to the TCC
The Kyiv police stated that the Hromadske journalist was taken to the territorial detention center after he refused to present his documents and failed to comply with the law enforcement officers’ lawful demands.
According to law enforcement officials, it was precisely his refusal to show his documents and cooperate with the police that served as the basis for his detention and subsequent transfer to the recruitment center.
"While on duty, police officers were checking the documents of a driver and a passenger. During this process, the passenger refused to provide identification documents and military registration documents. The man was asked to proceed to the Territorial Recruitment and Social Support Center to verify his military registration information. However, he categorically refused to comply with the lawful demands of law enforcement officers.”
The police emphasized that, as a result, “the officers detained the man and took him to one of the district recruitment and social support centers to verify his military registration information.”
“According to preliminary information, the man did not undergo a military medical examination in accordance with established procedures,” law enforcement officials noted.
The Kyiv Police Press Office clarified to UP that this is “routine and ongoing work” for the police. They explained that law enforcement officers check documents on the street and also stop vehicles. Anyone without proper documents or who violates military registration rules is taken to a military registration and enlistment office to verify their information.
In this specific case, according to the police, the driver’s documents were in order, so he was released after the check.
When asked what happens to the vehicle if the police stop a driver and determine that he is in violation of military registration rules, but there is no one else in the vehicle, a spokesperson for the press service noted that “the car is left on the street, but in such a way that it does not violate traffic rules.”
Update: At 9:34 p.m., the Kyiv City Military Registration and Enlistment Office reported that Hromadske journalist Yevhen Shulhat had been taken to one of the district military registration and enlistment offices as a violator of military registration rules.
According to the agency, a check revealed that he had not undergone a military medical examination on time. He was subsequently referred for the examination.
