Construction has begun in Zaporizhzhia on the city’s first underground preschool, which will ensure children’s safety throughout the day.

This was reported by Suspilne.

The facility is being built in the Shevchenkivskyi district of the city, near an existing preschool. The shelter will be more than six meters deep and will be able to accommodate up to 100 children at a time.

Preparatory work is currently underway at the construction site—the foundation is being laid, and structures are being prepared for future concrete pouring.

Today, the kindergarten operates in a hybrid format: children stay there for several hours without meals. According to the facility’s director, Larysa Yatsenko, the new space will allow for a fully organized educational process.

In the underground kindergarten, children will be able to learn, play, eat, and rest throughout the day in a shelter.

According to regional authorities, three such facilities are planned for the most dangerous areas of Zaporizhzhia, and up to ten similar shelters are planned for the region as a whole.

The first underground kindergartens are scheduled to open by September 1.

As a reminder, three underground schools built last year in Kherson still cannot accept students due to lengthy paperwork and safety standard inspections.
