Ukraine and Romania have agreed to strengthen cooperation in the field of transportation
Ukraine and Romania signed a Memorandum of Understanding on strengthening cooperation to ensure the reliable transit of Ukrainian goods and to develop transportation links and border infrastructure.
The document was signed during the Carpathian Economic Forum by Mykola Kalashnyk, Ukraine’s Minister of Recovery, Infrastructure, and Transport, and Ionel Scriostanu, State Secretary of Romania’s Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure.
The memorandum is based on an updated Strategy for the Development of Border Infrastructure between the two countries, which covers 17 border crossing points, 10 of which are new proposals. The document provides for the modernization and development of road border crossing points and access roads, the strengthening of rail connections, the simplification of border control procedures, and the expansion of opportunities for transshipment of Ukrainian cargo at Romanian ports.
According to the Ukrainian minister, the Romanian route is extremely important for Ukrainian logistics amid a full-scale war, so it is crucial to increase the border’s throughput capacity and establish stable and predictable routes to the European Union and Romanian ports. The next step will be to move forward with the implementation of specific infrastructure projects and secure funding for their completion.

Ukraine has opened a new road border crossing on the border with Romania. The “Bila Tserkva–Sighetu Marmatiei” border crossing in Zakarpattia Oblast will operate around the clock and will use temporary infrastructure for the time being. Passenger vehicles weighing up to 3.5 metric tons will be able to pass through it.
In Romania, more than 220,000 Ukrainian citizens are registered as recipients of temporary protection. In total, more than 223,000 people have received this status since the start of the full-scale war in the country. Nearly half of the asylum applications filed in Romania this year have also come from Ukrainians.
