Ukraine plans to use Katran drones to intercept vessels belonging to Russia's shadow fleet
Ukraine is developing a new system for “Katran” maritime drones that will allow for the detention of sanctioned vessels belonging to Russia’s shadow fleet and their escort to ports for subsequent confiscation, rather than destruction.
A representative of Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate, codenamed “Ninth,” shared this information in a comment to Business Insider.
According to him, if the vessel complies with the demands, it will be escorted to a designated port, where the cargo and the vessel itself may be confiscated in accordance with international law. If the crew refuses to comply, Ukraine reserves the right to take other measures.
The GUR notes that this approach is more humane than destroying vessels with unknown cargo. At the same time, “Katran” drones will continue to retain the ability to use force if necessary.
Previously, the “Katran” was used primarily as a strike drone to target Russian ships. It was later equipped with machine guns and surface-to-air missiles, which significantly expanded its combat capabilities.
