Ukraine has denounced Russia's repression of journalists in the occupied territories at the UN
During a meeting of the UN Committee on Information, Ukraine’s representative Dmytro Tymoshenko spoke out against a systematic campaign by the Russian Federation aimed at suppressing independent journalism in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine.
According to Ukrinform, Dmytro Tymoshenko, First Secretary of the Permanent Mission of Ukraine, emphasized this during the general debate at the UN Committee on Information.
"Russia’s war against Ukraine is accompanied by a systematic campaign of disinformation, censorship, and violence against journalists and media workers."
According to the diplomat, the Russian authorities are deliberately blurring the line between independent journalism and propaganda:
"They call propagandists 'journalists,' while persecuting real media professionals as 'terrorists,' 'extremists,' and Ukrainian 'saboteurs.'"
Illegal detentions of journalists
Ukraine cited specific examples of the unlawful detention of journalists from the temporarily occupied city of Melitopol, including:
- Yana Suvorova
- Georgiy Levchenko
- Vladislav Gershon
- Oleksandr Malyshev
- Yevgen Ilchenko
- Maksym Rupchov
- Anastasia Glukhovska
- Iryna Levchenko
Some of them were abducted after reporting on life under occupation, and charged with "terrorism," "espionage," or "sabotage."
Repression in Crimea and the Kherson region
The statement specifically mentions the persecution of journalists in the temporarily occupied Crimea, where journalists Iryna Danilovych and Vilena Temerianova are being illegally detained.
In 2024, Crimean Tatar journalists Rustem Osmanov and Aziz Azizov were detained.
In the Kherson region, journalist Hennadiy Osmak was abducted.
