Ukraine celebrates Palm Sunday and the anniversary of Pylyp Orlyk’s first Constitution

Today, April 5, 2026, Ukrainians are marking the 1,501st day since the start of the full-scale invasion, combining deep religious traditions, national commemorations, and professional holidays on this day.

The main event for believers is Palm Sunday—a major Christian holiday symbolizing Jesus Christ’s entry into Jerusalem one week before Easter.

In Ukrainian tradition, willow branches are used instead of palm branches—a tree that is the first to awaken after winter.

The blessed twigs are considered a symbol of life and God’s blessing, and the popular saying “It’s not me who strikes—it’s the willow” accompanies wishes for health and well-being.

At the same time, the Church commemorates the holy martyrs Theodulus and Agapitus, who died for their faith at sea, remaining steadfast in the face of torture.

This day also holds significant national importance, as April 5 marks the anniversary of the adoption of Ukraine’s First Constitution. It was on this day in 1710 that Pylyp Orlyk’s Constitution was adopted.

This unique document was ahead of its time, laying the foundations for a democratic system, the separation of powers, and the rights of the Cossacks, becoming a true symbol of the Ukrainians’ centuries-long quest for freedom.

The professional community also has reasons to celebrate today, as the first Sunday in April is traditionally celebrated as Geologist Day.

This holiday honors specialists who work in challenging expeditionary conditions to strengthen the economy and search for natural resources. Also on April 5, we celebrate neonatologists—doctors who save the lives of the youngest patients in the first minutes of their birth.

Internationally, today marks Conscience Day—a holiday that calls for self-reflection and moral responsibility for one’s own actions.

In addition to ethical issues, the world is turning its attention to culture and daily life: International Trombone Week is kicking off, bringing together musicians of various genres, while foodies are celebrating International Soup Day—one of humanity’s oldest dishes.

As a reminder, for many Ukrainian believers, the period of Great Lent is a time of spiritual purification, reflection, and preparation for the main Christian holiday—Easter.

A cold snap and frost are expected in Ukraine on Easter.

Easter is a movable feast, the date of which changes every year. In 2026, it may be celebrated on either April 5 or April 12, which causes some confusion.
