Ukraine has ordered a new batch of shells from Rheinmetall

UA.NEWS 30 June 2026 17:57
Ukraine has ordered a new batch of shells from Rheinmetall

Ukraine has signed a new contract with the German defense company Rheinmetall for the supply of artillery shells. The deal is estimated to be worth tens of millions of euros, and the first deliveries are expected in 2027.

The German defense conglomerate Rheinmetall has received a new order from Ukraine for the production of artillery ammunition. The company officially announced this in a statement. Rheinmetall has not disclosed the exact amount of the contract. However, the company noted that the deal is worth tens of millions of euros. These funds will be reflected in the group’s financial statements for the second quarter of 2026.

The contract is expected to be fulfilled over a long period. According to the company’s plan, the ordered artillery shells are to be delivered to Ukraine in the first quarter of 2027. Rheinmetall also reported that ammunition production has already begun. The shells will be manufactured at the company’s facility in Spain, which has significantly expanded its production capacity in recent years.

The new contract marks another step in the cooperation between Ukraine and one of Europe’s largest arms manufacturers. Rheinmetall already supplies Ukraine with various types of military equipment, ammunition, and armored vehicles, and is also involved in the development of Ukraine’s defense industry. The Ukrainian Armed Forces’ need for artillery ammunition remains very high. That is why Ukraine continues to enter into long-term agreements with European manufacturers to ensure a stable supply of shells in the future.

At the same time, Ukraine’s allies continue to fund international programs for the procurement of ammunition. Earlier, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced that Berlin would allocate 300 million euros to support a Czech initiative to procure and supply artillery shells to Ukraine. This program has already made it possible to secure hundreds of thousands of rounds of ammunition from various countries around the world. It has become one of the key mechanisms for supplying the Ukrainian army with artillery shells during the war.

The new contract with Rheinmetall complements these efforts and is expected to help bolster ammunition stocks in the medium term. Although deliveries are scheduled for 2027, production has already begun, demonstrating the European defense industry’s long-term commitment to supporting Ukraine. This was reported by Rheinmetall.

The German defense conglomerate Rheinmetall is concerned that France may withdraw from the joint program to develop a new tank amid problems with the already derailed European fighter jet project. The company acknowledges that political and financial difficulties in EU defense cooperation could also jeopardize next-generation ground-based projects.

The Moscow Military Prosecutor’s Office, together with the joint-stock company “Garnizon,” which is subordinate to the Russian Ministry of Defense, has filed a lawsuit with the Moscow Arbitration Court against the German defense conglomerate Rheinmetall.
