Ukrainian schoolchildren won the first European Mathematical Olympiad
Ukrainian schoolchildren took first place in the team standings at the inaugural European Mathematical Olympiad in Vilnius. They won a total of eight medals, including three gold medals. Teams from 19 countries participated in the competition, and Ukraine’s performance was one of the strongest at the international level this year. This was reported by the Ministry of Education and Science.
Ukrainian students achieved the best result at the first European Mathematical Olympiad, which took place from April 23 to 29 in Vilnius. At the end of the competition, Ukraine took first place in the team standings.
The tournament featured 124 participants from 19 countries. Ukraine was represented by two teams—the main team and the junior team—comprising a total of 12 students from eight regions. As a result, the Ukrainian team won three gold and five bronze medals, confidently outpacing their competitors and topping the final standings.
The Olympiad was organized by the Lithuanian MO Akademija and the “Ukrainian Mathematical Olympiads” community. The competition was a joint initiative of Ukraine and Lithuania.
The Ukrainian teams consisted of: Ostap Hishchak, Oleksandr Gorbunov, Volodymyr Hryn, Volodymyr Pryhunov, Dmytro Smohol, Ivan Kharchuk, Andrii Atamanenko, Yegor Vara, Pavlo Verbytskyi, Danylo Hrybuk, Anna-Maria Kuzan, and Nazar Khomyak. The team leaders were Artem Urazovsky and Klymentiy Zolotaryov.
The success at the Olympiad served as yet another confirmation that Ukrainian students remain competitive at the international level even under challenging conditions. Education officials note that such victories demonstrate a consistently high level of mathematical proficiency in Ukraine.
It is also noted that Ukrainian students recently won a prize at the Teens in AI 2026 international artificial intelligence hackathon, continuing a series of successful performances at global competitions.
April 2026 in Kyiv and the surrounding region was marked by sharp temperature swings. The region recorded both warm days with temperatures exceeding +18 °C and frosts, some of which set records. Weather conditions changed abruptly, making the month memorable for its “swings” between spring warmth and cold.
