Ukrainian manufacturers from seven regions will participate in the construction of new Alstom electric locomotives
The French engineering corporation Alstom Transport has officially identified the list of Ukrainian companies that will supply components for Alstom’s latest dual-system electric locomotives, the UA8AC.
This was reported by the press service of Ukrzaliznytsia, emphasizing the strategic importance of localizing production for the domestic economy.
The partner selection process was based on monitoring and a competitive selection among companies that already have experience in repairing locomotives and rolling stock.
Alstom specialists analyzed the capabilities of Ukrainian factories to ensure high-quality parts for European railway equipment.
Production of a wide range of equipment will be launched in Ukraine: from radio stations and locomotive safety systems to fire alarms and brake system components.
Domestic craftsmen will also manufacture couplers, cab heaters, seats for train operators, and sanding system components.
A separate item on the agenda is the production of railway wheels, which is critical for the continued operation of the fleet. “An electric locomotive changes its set of wheels at least 10 times over its lifecycle.
Therefore, the ability to purchase them in Ukraine is not just about localization, but about stability and cost savings,” emphasized UZ.
The geographic scope of the involved enterprises covers seven regions: Kyiv, Kharkiv, Sumy, Poltava, Cherkasy, Zaporizhzhia, and Khmelnytskyi.
Although the names of specific factories are not disclosed for security reasons, their contribution will form the basis for creating Ukraine’s first-ever fleet of European freight locomotives.
Production of the first batch has already begun, and the bodies of the debut electric locomotive are ready for assembly.
The first prototype is expected to arrive in Ukraine in early 2027 for certification, and delivery of all 55 locomotives will be completed by May 2029.
As a reminder, Ukrzaliznytsia is changing train routes to Kryvyi Rih starting April 3.
JSC Ukrzaliznytsia is introducing four additional trains and extending one long-distance route to Yaremche due to increased passenger traffic.
On March 24, 2026, Oleksandr Pertsovskyi, Chairman of the Board of JSC Ukrzaliznytsia, announced a change in the Russian Federation’s shelling tactics, noting that since late 2025, it has begun systematically attacking rolling stock while it is in motion.
