Ukrainians Have Been Warned About Fake Electricity Bills from Scammers

The State Service for Special Communications and Information Protection of Ukraine has urged citizens to be cautious due to the spread of emails and messages on messaging apps containing fake electricity bills, which are being sent out purportedly from the Ministry of Energy.

The attackers’ goal is to lure users to phishing websites to steal personal or banking information, gain access to accounts, and infect devices with malware. The ministry emphasized that the Ministry of Energy does not send out bills or collect utility payments, as bills are issued exclusively by contracted suppliers.

To protect themselves, citizens are advised not to click on suspicious links, not to enter personal information on unknown websites, and to verify information through their electricity provider’s official channels.

The Cyber Police and the Pension Fund of Ukraine are warning of a new wave of fraudulent schemes targeting pensioners. Fraudsters are spreading false messages on messaging apps and social media about alleged new payments and “pension supplements” in order to gain access to citizens’ banking information. The agencies urge people not to click on suspicious links and to verify information only through official sources.

Messages about alleged financial aid from international organizations have begun circulating widely in Ukraine. People are being offered 8,800 hryvnias from the UN or compensation from “Ukrenergo.” In reality, this is a scam designed to steal bank card information.
