Ukrainians have been warned of a significant increase in the price of cabbage
In Ukraine, the price of new-crop white cabbage has begun to rise rapidly. Currently, prices for this vegetable are already significantly higher than last year’s levels.
Farmers expect cabbage prices to rise further in the near future. The price increase is due to market changes and the supply situation for the new harvest.
How much does cabbage cost now?
Currently, Ukrainian farms are selling white cabbage for 15–22 hryvnias per kilogram. On average, this is 37% more expensive than a week ago.
At that time, the maximum price for this product did not exceed 18 hryvnias per kilogram.
At the same time, current prices are already, on average, 59% higher than during the same period last year.
Why cabbage prices are rising
Analysts cite a supply shortage in the Ukrainian market as the main reason for the price increase.
Most farms have already completed the selling season for early cabbage varieties, while late varieties have not yet begun to hit the market in large quantities. The situation has been complicated by hot weather, which has slightly slowed the ripening of the new crop.
At the same time, diseases and pests are spreading in the fields, causing the quality of part of the harvest to deteriorate. As a result, there is less high-quality cabbage on the market, which also allows producers to raise prices.
Prices may rise even further
Demand for white cabbage, however, remains quite high. The combination of strong demand and limited supply continues to drive prices upward.
According to EastFruit, if current sales rates continue, Ukrainian farmers plan to further raise their selling prices for cabbage.
