Dogs with blue fur found in Chernobyl

Dog handlers living in the Chernobyl area have spotted a group of dogs with blue fur — the first time this has happened in the zone. The group, called “Dogs of Chernobyl,” shared a video showing several packs. The caretakers note that the animals were not blue last week and are trying to catch them to investigate the reasons for the change in coat color. Currently, about 700 dogs live in the exclusion zone, receiving regular food and medical care.

The dogs that remained after the 1986 evacuation are being actively studied for the effects of radiation, as they have adapted to the toxic environment. Recent studies have shown that the data may indicate genetic mutations that are passed down from generation to generation. Scientists have identified more than 400 genetic markers associated with adaptation to a contaminated environment, which contributes to the survival of animals in this area.

Further research will help us understand how dogs were able to survive in conditions of extreme radiation danger. The results of these studies may be important for scientific understanding of animal adaptation to polluted environments and potentially point to new avenues for studying the effects of radiation contamination on living organisms.
