In Odesa, a 38-year-old foreign national was sentenced to 13 years in prison for the attempted murder of two people

The Odessa Court of Appeals upheld the sentence handed down to a 38-year-old Afghan citizen who was convicted of robbery and the attempted murder of two people. The defense filed an appeal against the court’s decision.

The man was sentenced to 13 years in prison with confiscation of property. Prosecutors fully proved his guilt.

In September 2021, following a dispute, his live-in partner decided to end the relationship and move out. The man tried to prevent her from leaving and later, threatening her with a knife, took her gold jewelry and cell phone.

He subsequently stalked the woman, threatened to kill her, and repeatedly visited the supermarket where she worked. He demanded money and insisted that she take out loans and credits in her name to support him.

In October 2021, the foreign national came to the store again and waited for the woman after her shift ended. A security guard, who was aware of previous conflicts, came out to help her.

Near a public transportation stop, the man pulled out a folding knife and attacked his former partner. When the security guard tried to protect her, the attacker struck him as well.

Both victims sustained stab wounds—the woman in the neck and the man in the neck and chest. They were promptly taken to the hospital and received the necessary medical care.

This was reported by the Office of the Prosecutor General.
