Bread prices are rising faster in Ukraine — what prices are expected in June

In 2026, bread prices in Ukraine are rising much faster than last year. Among the main reasons are rising electricity costs for businesses and increased transportation expenses. At the same time, producers cannot fully pass these rising costs on to consumers.

Researcher Svitlana Cheremisina notes that demand for the segment of affordable bread varieties is particularly sensitive to price changes. Therefore, the rise in bread prices is gradual but steady. This year, the rate of increase significantly outpaces the figures for 2025.

“The monthly rate of price increases for the bakery industry’s product range in 2026 is 1.5 to 2 times higher than last year’s figures,” notes Svitlana Cheremisina.

According to data cited by the expert, the monthly rate of increase in bread prices in 2025 was as follows:

  • wheat bread made from premium flour – 1.5–2%;
  • wheat bread made from first-grade flour – 0.9–1.5%;
  • rye bread – 0.6–1.3%;
  • loaf bread – 0.5–1%.

The upward price trend is likely to continue, given the worsening energy situation in Ukraine and the significant rise in fuel prices.

It is known that since the beginning of 2026, wheat bread made from premium-grade flour has risen in price by 6.6%—to 64.55 hryvnia per kilogram, while wheat bread made from first-grade flour has risen in price by 9.4% and currently costs 53.42 hryvnia per kilogram.

The price of rye bread has also risen by 6.7%—to 54.65 hryvnia per kilogram. A loaf of bread has risen in price by 5.4% and currently costs 32.47 hryvnia for 500 grams.

What bread prices can we expect in June?

According to expert Svitlana Cheremisina’s forecast, in June, wheat bread made from premium-grade flour will cost at least 3–5% more: approximately 66–67 hryvnias per kilogram.

Wheat bread made from first-grade flour will increase in price by another 3–5%—to 55 hryvnias per kilogram. Rye bread is expected to rise in price by 2.5–4%—to 56–57 hryvnias per kilogram.

A loaf of bread may cost 3–4% more, specifically 33–34 hryvnias for 500 grams.

What will happen to prices for baked goods and confectionery?

Since manufacturers cannot rapidly increase the price of bread, they will partially attempt to offset rising costs by shifting toward products with higher profit margins. First and foremost, this includes pastries and sweet baked goods.

With this in mind, expert Svitlana Cheremisina forecasts further preemptive price increases for certain types of confectionery, baked goods, and value-added products. It is onto these that manufacturers will be able to shift rising production costs more quickly.

High production costs in the industry will remain the main drivers of further price increases for bread and baked goods.

Why is bread getting more expensive in Ukraine?

Among the reasons for rising bread prices in Ukraine is a significant increase in the cost of electricity and energy resources amid a worsening energy situation due to shelling. Energy costs are one of the key components of the production cost for companies with a continuous production cycle.

The final cost of bread for consumers is also significantly affected by rising fuel and logistics costs. This leads to increased expenses for transporting raw materials and finished products.

Wage increases in the industry amid a labor shortage are also putting additional pressure on prices. At the same time, the costs of flour, packaging, yeast, and other production inputs are rising. Additional risk factors for the price situation in June will include overall inflation trends in the economy, the devaluation of the hryvnia, and the persistence of high military risks.

Svitlana Cheremisina, an expert at the Institute of Agricultural Economics, discussed this in a comment to Channel 24.
