Ukraine may introduce penalty points for drivers

On August 21, Interior Minister Ivan Vygivsky announced that Ukraine plans to introduce a point-based penalty system for traffic violations. The Ministry of Internal Affairs also intends to install approximately 600 additional automated traffic enforcement cameras on dangerous and accident-prone stretches of road.

Ukraine plans to introduce a penalty point system for drivers and significantly expand the network of automated traffic enforcement cameras. Interior Minister Ivan Vygivsky announced this during a plenary session of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.

“We held a meeting of the National Security and Defense Council with my participation, along with the Law Enforcement Committee, members of parliament, and the public, where we discussed issues including penalty points. I think we also support this idea. It needs to be implemented,” he said.

According to the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, initial steps have already been taken to strengthen enforcement of speed limits. In particular, 50 additional speed cameras have been put into operation in Ukraine. At the same time, according to the minister’s assessment, approximately 600 more such devices need to be installed to ensure full control over all dangerous and accident-prone sections of road.

In addition, the Ministry of Internal Affairs announced the resumption of operations for special “Phantom” patrol vehicles. Externally, they look no different from ordinary cars, but they can automatically detect speeding while moving through traffic.

“We currently plan to deploy at least three within a month and purchase more of these ‘Phantoms’ in the near future,” Vygivsky added.

As a reminder, Greece will deploy 388 cameras to monitor red-light violations.
In Ukraine, another 50 automatic enforcement cameras began operating on August 20.
