Recruitment has begun in Ukraine for a new Antarctic expedition to the Akademik Vernadsky Station
The National Antarctic Scientific Center has launched a competitive selection process for the 32nd Ukrainian Antarctic Expedition, which will operate at the “Akademik Vernadsky” Station in 2027–2028. Applications will be accepted until August 7, 2026.
As is customary, the expedition will include scientists from various fields, including biologists, geophysicists, and meteorologists. They are also looking for support staff: a doctor, a cook, a systems administrator, a systems mechanic, and a diesel engineer.
As Deputy Minister of Education and Science Denys Kurbatov noted, the research conducted by Ukrainian polar explorers is of great importance not only for Ukraine but also for the global scientific community. According to him, this is precisely why the expedition seeks to recruit professional, motivated, and resilient individuals who are prepared to work in the isolated and challenging conditions of Antarctica.
The Ministry of Education and Science emphasized that the competition is open to the public. Anyone who meets the professional and other requirements may apply. In the first stage, candidates must submit an application, a resume, a cover letter, copies of their educational documents, employment record book, and military registration documents.
Currently, the 31st Ukrainian Antarctic Expedition, consisting of 14 members, is working at the “Academician Vernadsky” Station. Among them are three women: a doctor and two meteorologists, one of whom is leading the expedition. Of the current team, ten polar explorers are traveling to Antarctica for the first time, while four others have experience from previous overwinters.
This was reported on July 9 by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine.
As a reminder, a protected area has been established in Antarctica near the Akademik Vernadsky Station.
