Ukraine to ban use of "champagne" and "cognac" names from January 1, 2026
From January 1, 2026, alcohol producers in Ukraine will no longer be permitted to label their products as "champagne," "cognac," and several other historically protected names such as "port," "sherry," "madeira," and "calvados." This measure stems from the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the European Union and aims to align Ukraine with European legal and trade standards, highlighting the country's ongoing integration into the EU market.

The ban is designed not only to comply with EU regulations but also to protect consumers from misleading information about product origins. Ukrainian producers will need to adopt alternative names and revise their marketing accordingly to comply with the new standards.
This development is expected to improve product quality domestically and create new export opportunities under well-defined product names and manufacturing standards.
