A proposal has been made in Ukraine to rename Independence Day
A petition has been posted on the website of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine calling for a change to the official name of the national holiday observed on August 24. The author of the petition proposes renaming Ukraine’s Independence Day to the Day of the Restoration of Ukraine’s Independence.
The petition is addressed to Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko with a request to initiate the necessary amendments to current legislation.
The main concept of the initiative is based on affirming historical truth and the continuity of the Ukrainian statehood tradition, which spans over a thousand years from the times of Rus’, the Galicia-Volhynia Principality, the Hetmanate, and the Ukrainian People’s Republic. The text of the petition emphasizes that on August 24, 1991, Ukraine was not born as an entirely new state, but merely restored its sovereignty after decades of Soviet occupation. The author also recalls the proclamation of independence by the Ukrainian People’s Republic on January 22, 1918, and draws on the experience of other European countries, such as Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, which have legally enshrined the very fact of the restoration of their statehood in the names of their national holidays.
According to the initiator, changing the name will not diminish the significance of the events of 1991, but will help strengthen citizens’ national consciousness and effectively refute Russian propaganda myths that Ukraine allegedly emerged only as a result of the collapse of the USSR. It is expected that such a step will demonstrate to the international community the deep historical roots of Ukrainian political organization and improve the patriotic education of future generations.
This is stated on the website of petition No. 41/010030-26ep.
