Ukraine Will Introduce a Ban on Crayfish Fishing; How Long Will the Restriction Last?

In Ukraine, a seasonal ban on crayfish fishing will be in effect from August 15 to September 30 in most fisheries. The restriction is being implemented to preserve the crayfish population during their second molting period.

For each crayfish caught illegally, violators will be required to pay 3,332 hryvnias in damages. In addition, violations of fishing regulations are subject to administrative or criminal liability.

At the same time, three regions will have separate rules and exceptions regarding crayfish harvesting.

The restrictions are being implemented during the second molting period, when crayfish shed their old shells and are at their most vulnerable. The formation and hardening of the new shell can take anywhere from one to one and a half months.

In the Mykolaiv and Kherson regions, the ban will be in effect from August 10 to September 20.

In Zakarpattia, crayfish fishing is prohibited year-round. According to the State Agency for Fisheries, the broad-clawed crayfish, listed in Ukraine’s Red Book, predominates in local water bodies.

The following penalties apply for catching crayfish during the closed season:

  • an administrative fine;

  • criminal liability in cases provided for by law;

  • compensation for damages to the fishing industry—3,332 UAH for each illegally caught crayfish.

The State Agency for Fisheries explained that crayfish play an important role in water bodies because they consume organic debris and help clean the bottom.

This was reported by the State Agency of Ukraine for the Development of Land Reclamation, Fisheries, and Food Programs.
