Easter in 2027 will fall on May 2: how the date of the holiday is determined

Easter is a movable Christian holiday, so it is celebrated on different dates each year. The date of the celebration is determined by a special calculation system known as the Paschal Cycle.

Both the solar and lunar calendars are taken into account in the calculation. According to the decision of the First Ecumenical Council, adopted in 325, Easter is celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the spring equinox.

The Orthodox Church of Ukraine emphasizes that the date of Easter remains the same for believers regardless of whether they use the New Julian or Julian church calendar. This is because the rules for calculating the date of Easter are common to most Orthodox churches worldwide.

In 2027, Great Lent will begin on March 15 and last until May 1.

Orthodox Christians will celebrate the Resurrection of Christ on Sunday, May 2, 2027.

The OCU notes that the ancient system for calculating the date of Easter, established back in the days of the One Church, is still used today.
