Video: A German Shepherd from the U.S. Has Become the State Emergency Service's New Search-and-Rescue Dog in the Khmelnytskyi Region
Pava, a two-year-old German Shepherd, arrived in Ukraine from the U.S. to serve with the search-and-rescue canine unit of the Khmelnytskyi Garrison of the State Emergency Service. Since the summer, the dog has been undergoing professional training alongside the Rescue Service’s dog handlers.
During her acclimatization period, Pava has already learned to follow commands in Ukrainian and has become friends with her experienced four-legged partner—Jack, a German Shepherd.
“Pava will become a search-and-rescue dog for work in natural environments, just like Jack,” said dog handler Pavlo Shurko.
Once her training is complete, Pava will assist rescuers in searching for people in natural environments.
The dog was able to come to Ukraine and join the rescue team thanks to support from The Howard G. Buffett Foundation. The Howard G. Buffett Foundation donated service dogs to units of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, strengthening the search-and-rescue capabilities of Ukrainian rescuers.
