Over 1,000 animals have been evacuated from Vovchansk in 40 days — volunteers

Volunteers from the nonprofit organization “Animal Rescue Kharkiv” reported that they were able to evacuate 1,095 animals from Vovchansk over a 40-day period during the Russian military’s second offensive in May 2024.

The organization reported this itself.

According to the volunteers, the rescue operation began after Russian troops re-entered the city on May 10, 2024, when numerous requests for help for the animals started coming in.

Not only volunteers from Kharkiv but also other teams, including volunteers from Kyiv and Germany, joined the evacuation.

The NGO noted that the operation took place under constant threat of shelling: Russian troops deliberately targeted the crews, resulting in injuries and the loss of four vehicles.

Some of the rescued animals were later returned to their owners, while others were transferred to shelters or transported to other regions of Ukraine.

As a reminder, a newborn lemur at the Kyiv Zoo was named Bayraktar.

Animal welfare volunteers transferred a ring-tailed lemur, which had suffered from improper home care, to the Kyiv Zoological Park.
