The Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant has switched entirely to backup generators due to a loss of external power

The Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant has switched entirely to backup generators due to a loss of external power

The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant was left without any external power supply this morning after the last power line was disconnected.

This was reported by the IAEA on social media platform X.

As a result of the incident, the plant completely lost its external power supply. Backup diesel generators were automatically activated to ensure the operation of safety systems. The IAEA team on site continues to monitor the situation.

The international organization emphasized the danger such incidents pose to nuclear safety.

“The loss of external power supply once again highlights the risks to nuclear safety during the conflict,” said IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi.

At the same time, the agency is negotiating with all parties regarding a possible local ceasefire necessary to repair the power line, which could restore external power to the plant.

In March, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant lost connection to the 750-kilovolt “Dniprovska” power line.

Additionally, in response to the idea of joint management of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant proposed by the U.S., Russian representatives stated their refusal to compromise.

Earlier, Rostekhnadzor issued a 10-year operating license for the first power unit of the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.

The Ministry of Energy of Ukraine strongly condemned Russia’s attempt to issue a “license” for one of the power units at the Zaporizhzhia NPP, calling it a worthless and dangerous move. Restarting the reactor under occupation poses a risk of a nuclear accident and has international consequences.
