Zaluzhny explained why he was criticized while serving as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine
Former Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valeriy Zaluzhny stated that his assessments of developments in military technology and the need to change approaches to warfare had, at the time, drawn political criticism in Ukraine.
In his column, “The War That Changed Everything: On Historical Mistakes, the Role of Progress, and the New World,” he noted that in the summer of 2023, the war in Ukraine began to demand new approaches to survival on the battlefield. In the fall of that same year, his initial conclusions regarding technological changes, according to Zaluzhny, were met with misunderstanding and political criticism.
“Those who, just three years ago, leveled their complaints against me, today insist that technology is their only correct solution,” the diplomat wrote.
Zaluzhny noted that attitudes toward military technology in Ukraine have now changed significantly. According to him, what previously met with resistance has today become a politically and financially advantageous direction.
He also emphasized that technological progress benefits not only Ukraine but also its adversaries. As a result, the nature of war has changed, and military strategies and doctrines must constantly adapt alongside the development of weaponry.
“It is correct to say that in 2026, there will be a war of technologies—and not only that. It will also be a war of strategies and doctrines that are constantly changing under the pressure of progress,” Zaluzhny concluded.
