Zelenskyy ordered the formation of a new brigade within the Navy
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed Decree No. 585 of July 4, 2026, instructing the immediate formation of a separate mine-countermeasures brigade within the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ Naval Forces.
This decision is a strategically important step toward ensuring the safety of navigation and strengthening the protection of the Black Sea against the constant threats posed by Russian aggression.
According to the text of the published document, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine must urgently resolve all organizational issues necessary for the effective functioning of the new military unit.
At the same time, the Ministry of Defense, in conjunction with the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, has received clear instructions regarding the practical formation of the brigade and the provision of all necessary equipment.
The decree itself emphasizes the importance of strengthening the state’s defense capabilities in the maritime zone.
“The decision was adopted with the aim of ensuring the protection of Ukraine’s national interests, effectively countering the Russian Federation’s armed aggression against Ukraine, responding to security threats in the Black Sea, neutralizing the mine threat to shipping, and building up the mine-countermeasure capabilities of the Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine,” the official statement notes.
This is set forth in the relevant decree of the head of state, No. 585, dated July 4, 2026.
