Heavy rains and hail in Ukraine have damaged crops and infrastructure

Heavy rains and hail in Ukraine have damaged crops and infrastructure

Heavy rains, strong winds, and hail have hit several regions of Ukraine, causing significant damage to agriculture and infrastructure. In Ukraine, crops and farms have been affected by the bad weather; in particular, in the Cherkasy region, floodwaters washed away watermelon seedlings and damaged irrigation systems. In other regions, there have been reports of fallen trees, localized flooding, and power outages. Meteorologists warn that unstable weather conditions may persist.

Heavy rain destroyed crops in the Cherkasy region

Farmer Mykhailo Paliy from the village of Stebliv in the Cherkasy region reported that heavy rain damaged part of the watermelon seedlings and completely destroyed the irrigation system in the field.

According to him, the floodwaters washed away the plastic sheeting, the drip irrigation system, and part of the already prepared plantings.

Damage to the irrigation system and losses

Paliy noted that after the rain, he had to rebuild the plot’s infrastructure.

"There was heavy rain; part of our field was simply washed away. The plastic sheeting, drip lines, and tape—everything was swept away; we had to redo everything," the farmer said.

The bad weather also damaged the experimental planting: several dozen watermelon plants were washed away by the floodwaters after a trial planting that was planned to be scaled up in the future.

Farmers’ Reaction

The farmer’s wife, Lyudmila Paliy, added that the field was completely flooded.

"We were supposed to go plant in the morning; we arrived, and everything was flooded. It’s a good thing we didn’t see it at night—it would have been a shock," she noted.

According to her, the use of mulch film and drip irrigation remains critically important for preserving the harvest under current weather conditions.

Consequences of the storm and weather conditions

The farmer estimated the damage from the storm at approximately 100,000 hryvnias, including restoration work, materials, and fuel.

On a 2.5-hectare plot, 11,500 plants have already been planted, most of which are watermelons.

Meanwhile, the effects of the storm are also being reported in several regions of Ukraine.

In the Ternopil region, heavy hail damaged vegetable gardens, and in Shipyntsi, damage to trees and downed power lines were reported.

In Dnipro, large hailstones and squally winds were reported.

Forecasters are warning of thunderstorms, heavy rain, and wind gusts of up to 15–20 m/s in several regions, including Kyiv, Zhytomyr, and Odesa. A yellow danger level has been declared.

Recommendations during severe weather

During heavy rainfall and squalls, it is recommended to avoid being outdoors, stay away from trees and power lines, and take weather warnings into account when planning trips.

This is reported with reference to information from social media and agronews.ua.

The storm left thousands of people in the Kyiv region without power.
